Charles Isaacson was born in Kirtling in 1880 (Newmarket Q3-1880 3B:532), son of Joseph and Sarah ISAACSON, (née PLEDGER).
1881 census...Aged 10 months, he was at Kirtling Green Cottage, Kirtling, with his father Joseph ISAACSON [24] farm labourer born Cheveley; his mother Sarah [26] born Kirtling, and sisters Mercy [6], Nelly [5] and Ethel [3]. All the children were born in Kirtling. 1891 census...Aged 10, he was at The Cottage, The Street, Kirtling with his parents, sisters Mary (Mercy), Ethel, Jane [7] and Alice ][5] and brother John [1]. The new siblings were born in Kirtling, 1901 census...Aged 21 a farm labourer, he was still at the Street, Kirtling with his parents, brother John, sister Bertha [9] and brother George [7], both born in Kirtling. In 1904, in Kirtling, he married Julia Alice PETTITT (b.26-6-1883) (Newmarket Q4-1904 3B:1165) 1911 census...Aged 31, a farm labourer, he was at The Street, Kirtling with his wife of 5 years, Julia Alice [27] born Upend. His mother died in 1904 and his father died in 1906. His widow was still at The Street, Kirtling on his pension card. |

He enlisted in Newmarket. A great many of 2nd Battalion were captured on 27th May 1918 at the Chemin des Dames in the Aisne valley when the German Spring offensive very nearly ended the war in Germany's favour. By August however the Allies had recovered and were pushing the Germans back all along the front. Charles' death was the only one in the battalion that day, he was one of the unlucky ones to die when involved in no set battle. |
